I teach a number of courses at the University of Amsterdam:
- African Politics in Regional and Global Perspective (6 EC)
- Global Politics of Africa (9 EC)
- MA thesis supervision seminar International and Multilateral Politics of the Global South (24 EC)
- Security and multilateralism (12 EC)
- Beyond the headlines: Palestine (6 EC)
In addition, I regularly teach in diplomatic and professional education programmes at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy and at Clingendael.
I currently serve on the following PhD committees:
- Main supervisor: Fiona Janssen, UvA (Violence and governance of global critical minerals in Africa)
- Supervision committee member: Tendai Kasinganeti (African climate diplomacy)
- Committee member: Maureen Fubara (Subnational incumbents and electoral violence in Nigeria), Leonie Jegen (Euro-Senegalese borderwork and the reproduction of coloniality)
I am open to supervising PhD theses on themes including (but not limited to) contemporary IR debates in African politics, Africa and global multilateralism, Africa-EU relations, African Union politics, and the funding of International Organizations. I take an active, enthusiastic approach to supervision and am keen to work with motivated students from diverse educational and personal backgrounds.
I do not currently have paid PhD opportunities available. Self-funded PhDs are, however, possible at the University of Amsterdam, and interested candidates should familiarise themselves with the ‘external PhD‘ modalities at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research.
If you are interested in exploring supervision, please send a brief project description, CV, and a plan for funding the PhD to me. I will respond only to original, well-researched proposals that demonstrate sustained engagement with the topic and that were not produced with text-generating LLMs.
